Welcome to the ABSA-DOVENEST Last Expense Umbrella Cover, a group last respect package designed for member-families of institutions like Alumni, Chamas, Churches, Investment groups, and Saccos. This cover is offered by Absa Life Assurance (K) Ltd. through Dovenest Insurance Brokers Ltd. and is renewable annually for a term of one year.

Here are some frequently asked questions and important terms to help you understand the cover:

1) What is the ABSA-DOVENEST Last Expense umbrella cover?

The ABSA-DOVENEST Last Expense is a group last respect package that provides financial support for funeral expenses in the event of natural or accidental death within the insured group.

2) What are the benefits of the ABSA-DOVENEST Last Expense?

We offer seven different cover options to suit your needs. Under any option, the policy will pay the chosen sum assured for up to five (5) deaths per family per year upon the death of the insured member and their named dependents.

3) How long will I wait before I receive the claimed amount?

Claims are typically processed and paid within 48 working hours after we receive and approve all complete and valid claim documentation.

4) Is there cover for young adults (over 25 years old)?

Yes! Young individuals aged between 21 and 30 years can obtain cover on a stand-alone basis at a discounted premium. This option is also available for orphans and those who are no longer considered dependents under a scheme after turning 25 years old.

5) What are the entry requirements?

Corporate Requirements and Leaders’ Role:

  • Copy of the institution's Registration Certificate
  • Banking details (where applicable)
  • Excel sheet summarizing all members, using the prescribed template provided.

Individual Member Requirements (Each member must provide CLEAR copies of the following MANDATORY documents):

  • Complete proposal form for each member
  • Member’s National ID or valid Kenyan Passport
  • Member’s KRA PIN
  • Member’s spouse’s National ID or valid Passport
  • National ID or valid Passport of each of the Member’s biological parents and parents-in-law
  • Member’s children: Birth Certificate or Notification of Birth, Passport, or National ID (if over 18 years) for each child
  • Affidavit of support for any non-biological child(ren) under 25 years
  • Excel sheet summarizing all members, using the prescribed template provided to the group leadership.

6) Is there a maximum cover for children?

Yes. In accordance with Kenyan law (Insurance Act, CAP 487, Section 96(1), (2)), the maximum benefit payable for the death of a child aged less than 10 years is Kshs. 100,000.

7) Does the policy provide for grief & counselling?

Yes, the policy includes one counselling session per family per death of a nuclear family member, with a maximum of two sessions per year. These sessions are conducted by professional counselors.

8) What happens if the principal member dies?

The policy will remain active. The Spouse, principal’s father, mother, father-in-law, mother-in-law, or grown-up child can take over as the principal member, in that order, as long as the policy remains paid and active.

9) Can different members choose different cover options?

No. The entire group will select a common cover option under option 2. However, under option 1 of the pricing schedule, the group will be allowed to select only two options that are next to each other.

10) Can members change their details during the cover period?

Yes. Members can add, delete, or change the details of their covered dependents as needed by completing and signing the appropriate forms. Examples include adding a spouse and parents-in-law upon marriage or adding a newborn child. Any newly added member will be subject to the applicable waiting period from their date of joining.

11) Where do members send completed application forms?

Completed application forms should be sent to YOUR Welfare Common e-mail address (XXXXXYYY@GMAIL.COM), with a copy sent to Dovenest Insurance Brokers Ltd. at [email address removed].

12) What are the eligibility criteria (Age Next Birthday)?

  • Children: 2 weeks - 25 years
  • Parents & Parents-in-Law: 31 - 85 years
  • Principal & Spouse: 19 - 70 years

There is NO maximum/exit age for Principal members, Spouses, and Parents/Parents-in-Law, subject to continuous cover renewal. The maximum age for children is 25 years.

13) When does the cover start?

The cover for the entire group commences when the group reaches a minimum of 10 principal members. Individuals joining later will renew their cover on the same date as the rest of the group in the following year.

14) Is there a waiting period?

Yes. There is a 1-month waiting period for the nucleus family and a 3-month waiting period for parents and parents-in-law from the date of submission and payment. Upon policy renewal, the full premium should be paid within 30 days of the cover renewal date.

15) Does the policy lapse after making a claim?

No, the policy will cover up to 5 claims per family per year without reinstatement. This is the maximum number of claims possible per family annually.

16) What is the claims process?

Claims are paid within 48 working hours after receipt and approval of all complete and valid claim documentation.

The eligible claimant payee will be the Principal, Spouse, Child (>=18 years), Parent, Welfare Group, or a Legal administrator, in that order.

Claims Procedure:

(a) Report the unfortunate death to the Welfare Administrator. (b) Download or collect the claim form from your Administrator or the Dovenest Brokers website. (c) File a Notification of Death by submitting a duly filled claim form. (d) The Welfare/Group leader’s verification signature/stamp and statement are required on the form. (e) Attach a Certified/Stamped Burial permit (from the issuing hospital) or a Death Certificate. (f) Attach the Deceased’s identification document (National ID, Birth Certificate, or Passport). (g) Attach the National ID/Passport of the member/claimant. (h) Attach Proof of Bank details of the claimant (ATM card, Bank statement, or mini-statement). (i) Attach a Police abstract for accidental or crime-related deaths. (j) E-mail the complete claim papers to [email address removed] and copy your welfare e-mail address. (k) Provide the place and time for the Counselling therapy session for the nuclear family's loss of a member.

17) What are the applicable Exclusions?

The policy does not cover losses arising directly or indirectly from:

  1. Breach of any criminal law by the insured or anyone acting on their behalf or with their permission or knowledge, or by anyone claiming a benefit under this Policy.
  2. Self-inflicted injury or attempted suicide within the waiting period or during policy reinstatement.
  3. Driving a motor vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit.
  4. Intake of illegal drugs or alcohol.
  5. Active and willful participation in war, civil commotion, riot, terrorist activity, or rebellion.
  6. Radioactivity or nuclear explosion.

The Policy DOES NOT Exclude: Political Violence and Terrorism Extension, AIDS/HIV, and suicide, subject to the applicable waiting periods.

18) Do members receive any document to confirm membership?

Yes, members will receive annual certificates showing the covered individuals, premiums paid, and a summary of the cover. The master policy is issued to Dovenest Insurance Brokers Ltd.

19) Should I take this cover if I have existing cover elsewhere (including my employer’s)?

Yes, you can hold multiple last expense covers in different groups. This cover is not subject to the Indemnity Principle of insurance. It will pay the promised sum upon the death of a member or a named and admitted dependent for the one-year cover period, regardless of other existing covers, up to a maximum limit of Kes 1 million under Absa Life Assurance Kenya. It will also pay for any/all parent(s) named multiple times by siblings, subject to a combined maximum of Kes 1 million.
